Cheltenham Area Residents for Equality (CARE): Want to serve on the Cheltenham Township Human Relations Commission? Here's how...

Cheltenham passed on Wednesday night an ordinance creating a human relations commission, a vehicle to combat discrimination and promote equality before the law.

Now the township is seeking residents interested in serving on the commission. The ordinance is available here. There are nine positions which will ultimately have three-year staggered terms. Only registered voters are eligible. The application deadline is 4:30 p.m. on March 30, 2012.

Welcome to Cheltenham Areas Residents for Equality

Cheltenham Area Residents for Equality (CARE) is working to enact legislation in Cheltenham to guarantee basic human rights to all without regard to personal characteristics listed above. Many of these groups are already protected by state-wide legislation, and a local ordinance would allow victims of discrimination to work through their complaints locally. Others, specifically the LGBT community, are not protected by Pennsylvania law, so an anti-discrimination ordinance in Cheltenham is needed to guarantee these individuals the same basic rights as everyone else. We hope that you will join our efforts as we strive to create a community that lives up to the best we can be. We CARE!

As a resident of Cheltenham Township, I believe that all people, including gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals, deserve respect and dignity and that this must be accomplished through legislation at the federal, state, and local levels. Since the Congress and the State Legislature consistently refuse to address this pressing issue, we must do so in Cheltenham Township. I strongly encourage you to join 25 other Pennsylvania communities, including many neighboring townships and boroughs, and support the creation of a Cheltenham Township Human Relations Commission. Such a commission is essential to educating and protecting our residents and providing a local mechanism for addressing discrimination. Please help Cheltehnham Township warrant our reputation as a progressive community that values all of its citizens.
